Photographs of Bath

Bath is one of Britain's most photographed cities, offering opportunities across almost every genre of photography. Living nearby, I have returned to it repeatedly, not to recreate familiar postcard views, but to explore the character of the city as a place where people live, work and visit. Each visit focuses on a different aspect of Bath—its architecture, regeneration, streets, riverside, and changing relationship between past and present. Together, these small projects are intended to build a broader documentary portrait of the city, revealing both its celebrated beauty and its everyday life. This growing body of work forms the foundation of a longer-term project that I hope will ultimately develop into both a photobook and an RPS distinction submission.

Bath Abbey Surrounds
2026
Bath Abbey has stood at the heart of the city for centuries, providing a sense of permanence amid the constant movement of everyday life. This project explores the streets and spaces surrounding the Abbey, observing how people pass through this historic setting while the architecture remains unchanged. Several of the photographs use long exposures to blur the movement of people, emphasising the contrast between the enduring presence of the buildings and the fleeting nature of those who visit them. Together, these images form part of an ongoing documentary study of Bath and its evolving relationship between history, place and people.
Bath Streets
2026
Away from Bath's famous landmarks lies a network of streets, lanes, passages and courtyards that reveal the city's everyday character. This project explores these quieter spaces, where Georgian architecture, modern interventions and daily life come together to create an ever-changing urban landscape. Rather than seeking iconic views, I have focused on the details, patterns and atmosphere that give Bath its distinctive sense of place. Together, these photographs form part of an ongoing documentary study of the city and its evolving identity.
Bath Riverline
2026
The Bath Riverline follows the River Avon through a changing city, linking its industrial past with contemporary redevelopment. Rather than seeking familiar postcard views, this project explores the architecture, spaces and atmosphere found along the river, where former mills and warehouses have been transformed into new homes and workplaces. The photographs examine the relationship between historic and modern buildings, revealing how Bath continues to evolve while retaining the character of its industrial heritage. Together they form part of an ongoing documentary study of the city that will contribute to a larger body of work.
